Netzer Announces New Roster of Emissaries
Netzer Olami, the World Union’s international Zionist youth movement, has sent (or will soon be sending) the following Israelis to serve as shlichim (emissaries) abroad:
• Yehudit Vorochov, who replaces Anna Kislanski as the central shlicha for North America’s Union for Reform Judaism.
• Anat Baruch, who will soon take over for Sharon Shteinbock, now wrapping up three years as the Netzer shaliach in Sydney.
• Yehudit Winberger, Netzer's new volunteer shlicha to Germany, who is replacing Sivan Gaides, now ending two years of service.
• Rina Epstein, who will soon take up her position as a volunteer shlicha in Cape Town.
• Dana Friedman, who will replace Noa Marom, now concluding three years as the Netzer shlicha to the youth wing of Britain’s Liberal Jewish movement.
In addition, the following Netzer shlichim are in the middle of their service and will remain in place: Dana Bar Zuri (Melbourne, Australia), Ben Yarden (Britain’s Movement for Reform Judaism), Yonatan Gozlan (France), Igal Entenberg (Panama), Mor Rubinstein (Johannesburg), Rachel Kaplan (Toronto), and Chanan Sidor (North American Federation of Temple Youth).
Winberger, Epstein, Friedman, Yarden, Gozlan, Entenberg, Rubinstein, Kaplan and Sidor are all so-called volunteer shlichim.
According to Maoz Haviv, executive director of Netzer Olami, volunteer shlichim are assigned to their posts for just one year and receive no salary, being reimbursed only for their living expenses. “This means they cost only about a third of what it costs to send a ‘professional,’” says Haviv. He adds that the idea for the volunteer caught on in light of the Jewish Agency’s shrinking budget, and the shlichim often sign on for a second year, “demonstrating that they are no less successful.”
